If you’ve read the book, you know “The Devil Wears Prada” by Lauren Weisberger is very entertaining, and since Meryl Streep is one of my favorite actresses I find myself eager to see the movie. What I enjoyed about the novel (and a counterpart on the poetry publishing industry called “Apprentice to the Flower Poet G” by Debra Weinstein (read a good review in the San Francisco Chronicle) was the insider view readers got to two industries that fascinate me and I suspect many others.
But just as I hesitate to see movies that capitalize on the cruel behavior of girls, I worry that sitting in the audience, I’ll feel uncomfortable hearing people laugh at how mean Meryl will be, and the comments that will follow.
I have to think, too, about movies that portray men acting badly (usually in a sexual context a.k.a. “Secretary” where I turned the TV off when he began spanking her). Maybe there are just as many “men hurting men” movies, and I haven’t keep track of them. I’ll be on a mission to do that!
