I know when you’re in the line of fire, when there’s so much manipulation and deceit, it can be so frustrating. You want to scream, “Doesn’t anyone else see this?” But as much as you feel like your back is against the wall, it’s not as solid a structure as you may think.
You have the power of choice. Sometimes, you may not like the choices before you or you might feel those choices are limited, but you can still choose. And that, in itself, is a form of power.
There are, basically, two broad areas of choices. Choices that reflect our inner environment - our attitudes, our perspective and emotional state - how we’re going to be. And choices that engage our outer environment - our options, our reactions or responses - what we’re going to do.
Our outer world and our inner world work together. One does not exist without the other, no matter how compartmentalized or seemingly separate they appear. Our actions manifest from our inner being, and our inner being is affected by our actions. What’s important is the degree of our awareness of this interrelatedness, and the degree to which we take responsibility for both.
Extenuating circumstances may profoundly impact the choices for our inner world, but they are still choices. In fact, they are the most significant choices we can make, because we can always make them.
Relational aggression attempts to disempower us. It’s important we don’t do that to ourselves. Own this truth for you. Before you do anything else, stop for a moment and really let it sink in. Let yourself know that you are not helpless, that there is hope and you can effect a change either within you or within your reality.
Doing so will make a difference in your life.
