Rumors are insidious. They can develop a life and momentum of their own, and a bad reputation can follow you in your old circle or proceed you before you enter a new one. It can freeze you in time. A bad reputation becomes other people’s negative expectations, a filter through which others see you.

Sometimes, nothing you do can break you out of the prison of their preconceived notions of you, and nothing is so disheartening to find you have been judged by people you haven’t even met yet.

But the good news is while someone else can trash your reputation, you can build it. Rather than wasting time trying to counter what they say, you can focus your energy developing who you are as a person. You can create new connections with people worth your time and energy (and they are out there). You can even give others something else to talk about, as you bring more of your gifts and talents of who you are to your world.
